That Powerful Name of Jesus

Have you ever meditated upon the Name of Jesus? He has a more excellent Name than the angels (Heb 1:4). His Name is “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named” (Ephesians 1:21). Let’s look at a few passages that demonstrate these truths.

Blessings. The Name of Jesus permits us to have blessings that we can have in no other way.

  1. We receive forgiveness of our sins: “I am writing you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His Name’s sake” (1Peter 4:14).
  2. We can be saved only in His Name: “For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12; cf. 2:21; Romans 10:13).
  3. The Lord’s Presence is with those gathered in His Name: “For where two or three are gathered in My Name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).
  4. We can be delivered from sexual immorality, addictions, and a life of stealing by His finished work & in His Name: “Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor. 6:11).
  5. Our prayers will be answered: “Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My Name, He will give it to you. Until now you have asked for nothing in My Name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be full” (John 16:23,24; cf. John 14:13).
  6. We can be strengthened: “And on the basis of faith in His Name, it is the Name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know” (Acts 3:16).
  7. Healing is available in His Name: Peter told the lame man, “In the Name of Jesus the Nazarene- walk!” The man leaped up and started walking (Acts 3:6; cf. James 5:14,15).
  8. We can be victorious over demons in His Name: “The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your Name” (Luke 10:17; cf. Acts 16:18; Mark 9:38).
  9. Miracles and signs and wonders are done in Jesus’ Name: Peter asked God for boldness “while You extended Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the Name of Your Holy Servant, Jesus” (Acts 4:30).
  10.  His Name gives life: “These things are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His Name” (Lk. 20:31).

Cost and Responsibilities. Along with the blessing, the Name of Jesus carries with it a price to be paid and responsibilities to be fulfilled by His followers.

  1. Jesus warned that His followers would be hated by all: “You will be hated by all because of My Name” (Mt. 1022; cf. Mt. 24:9)
  2. Sometimes there are criticisms, threats, and persecution: “After calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the Name of Jesus” (Acts 5:40; cf. 5:28; 9:14,16).
  3. Sometimes a Christian’s life is in danger for the Name of Christ: “Barnabas and Saul, men who have risked their lives for the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 15:26; cf. Acts 7:1-60).
  4. Christians need to be willing to speak out boldly: Paul spoke out “boldly in the Name of Jesus” in Damascus, in Jerusalem, and everywhere else he went (e.g. Acts 9:27,28;cf. Acts 4:29).
  5. We must not deny His Name: You (the church at Philadelphia) “have kept my word and have not denied My Name” (Rev. 3:8).
  6. We can be disciplined: “In the Name of the Lord, I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for destruction of the flesh, so his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (1 Corinthians 5:4).
  7. We should be united in His Name: “I exhort you by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you: (1 Cor. 1:10).
  8. We should be grateful for everything: “always giving thanks for all things in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph. 5:20).

Jesus’ Name may be blasphemed (James 2:7), denied (Ev. 3:8), hated (Mt. 24:9), and misused (Acts 19:13) by His enemies, but God has exalted Him and bestowed on Him a name above every name (Phil. 2:9). It will be magnified (Acts 19:17) and every person who has ever lived from every country and every religion will one day bow before Him and confess that He is Lord: “At the Name of Jesus, every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Phil. 2:10).
